The Forever Full Smart Coaster has two purposes. It serves the traditional purpose of a coaster to absorb condensation from the glass with interchangeable absorption pads, to minimize chance of bacterial growth. The second purpose of the coaster design would be the weight sensor that would determine the difference in the weight of a full glass to an empty glass. Every time the glass is placed back on the coaster, it would measure and compare the new weight of the glass to the last time the glass was on the coaster. When the glass becomes lighter the coaster begins to glow. As the difference in weight in the glass becomes significant the coaster glows a soft orange, red or any color preferred from the center of the coaster, resulting in the glass taking on the color chosen. A soft glow would also come from the perimeter of the coaster.
The coasters would automatically reset and the light would switch off when the weight difference decreases, say from a refill or new drink. Lifting the glass off the coaster is not what causes the reset.
The purpose of this design concept is to help the waitstaff in commercial environments provide quicker service to customers. Environments could range from a large restaurant to a busy bar. Waitstaff would become more aware of customers needs with the help of a visual cue from the coasters.
The Forever Full Smart Coaster is a prototype for a future vision that would eliminate the use of coasters. My future vision would incorporate the entire surface area of the bar. No matter where put your glass the surface would light up to notify the waitstaff of a low drink. A concept similar to induction stovetops.
