Project Title: Bike route and visual perception of the city landscape in Bourgas city
Winner of Scholarships 2009-10, Master of Sustainable Urban Design, School of Design, IED Roma
GOAL of the project:
The main goal of the project is to present a bike-route in Bourgas, which will be situated in the central part of the city and the nearby standing quarters, it will provide easy access to the places, which are not directly served by public transport. The bike-route must also provide the best city view to the city landscape, the natural sights and to give access to the objects of cultural heritage and recreation parks of the city of Bourgas. Main goal is to create a public bike system with bicycles, provided by the municipality, and encourage intermodal transportation.
RANGE
The project ranges the most active part of the city and includes roads, pedestrian lanes and streets. The development and improvement of the functions in this territory must be subordinate to a goal: to construct cycle lanes, whose usage is economically beneficial to the citizens, offers easy and healthy way of moving, reduces the car traffic and improves the microclimate.
URBAN BICYCLE TRANSPORTATION
The most popular urban bicycle transportation is Public bike system, which is adopted by the cities, where riding a bike is a way of transportation. Public bike system is the ancestor of the Bicycle sharing system (also known as Yellow Bicycle programs, White Bicycle programs, public bike or free bike). Main goal of the system is to place bikes at the citizens’ disposal, in this way they don’t use their own bikes and cars and can move around the city very easily.
Municipality governments and public organizations present the system as intermodal transportation, that gives its users the opportunity to easily change transport and facilitates transit passing. Bicycle sharing systems can be divided into two general categories: Community Bike programs organized mostly by local community groups or non-profit organizations; and Smart Bike programs implemented by municipalities or through public-private partnerships, as in the case of Paris’ Vélib’ program.
