Loading ...Project Title: ECO BÁAXAL, Ecological and Sustainable Mayan School
Selected for Scholarships 2009-10, Master of Design Management, School of Design, IED Barcelona
Mayan communities have a very important legacy for humanity: their culture and ecosystems, which are endangered because their basic needs are not being covered. In an attempt to improve their quality of life, they are migrating to larger urban centers and selling their lands (rainforests and wetlands) to big companies that use these spaces to build large hotels and resorts, despite the impact that has on nature. In the process, they are loosing their values, integrity and sense of community.
This project’s objective is to preserve culture and biodiversity in rural Mexico by providing the necessary tools and spaces through Design and Art, in order to support today’s needs for basic education and training for people living in rainforest environments.
An important set of concepts must be combined to generate sustainable development today and in the future: education, design, ecology, economy and collective well-being. By combining these concepts, this initiative results in spaces designed for training, education and leisure for less fortunate people. Training provided focuses on nutrition, sustainable development and fair trade.
This is a way to understand the impact that man has on nature in order to minimize waste in the jungle and the importance of preserving our native traditions and our natural habitats for future generations.
Selected communities and participants will have a unique experience exploring areas of social development in a humble attempt to give life a new meaning.
The objective of this project is to create a space where: - Training and workshops will be provided addressing self sustainable and development issues in rural communities through design and art. - Leisure and education for children drive the concept, focusing on the preservation of culture and biodiversity.
This is a multidisciplinary project which involves sociologists, designers, artists and people interested in the preservation of ancient traditions, nature and biodiversity. This team will be supervised by a NGO (Non Governmental Organization) which works with indigenous communities.

Design must provide balance and solutions to reduce the damages that we are causing to our planet.

It’s very refreshing to see that there are people that are still intrested in helping the less fortunate. I know that this is a very big issue in Mexico. I am glad that this project can be done also because apart of helping communities they can recieve design and art education in the process. We should always support this king of ideas, great designs can be done with this proyect!

I think you guys are moving in a right direction! Education of people, who live in such a ovetry, giving them new ways of working, bringing more sence to their community and survivability in a modern world is very, very promising task! I respect you for what you are doing! I think in Russia we also should follow your great example, and create support for our own communities, which are clueless of contemporary skills, needed to be competitive and not to lose their own “I”. This is such a wonderful project due to the influence, not only talking about design, but sociologically speaking that can transcend in time and change History. It’s a rounded project, absolutely complete. Simple construction, interesting design with fine materials from the place, and with a heavy idea as helping people to develope themselves in the middle of nothing were education hasn’t arrive yet.
I am very proud of this project, I am sure that can be done in Mexico and also in other native countries over the world and will help to preserve their history taking care of their culture .
Also, it’s a huge contribution for Architects and Designers, for remeber us the origin of our carrer, helping people in their necesities.

Wilson defines biodiversity as “everything”, from the gene to the species, to all species comprised in communities and to the sum of all communities forming rich ecosystems on the Planet. Humans, in all their cultural beauty, must also be protected. Because at the base, where all the same, sharing a home as large as the Earth.

Este proyecto es un ejemplo para muchos de nosotros ya que nos enseña que todos podemos hacer algo por nuestro país y que además de una forma muy interesante.
