Project Title: “Design Column” - Romania
Selected for scholarships 2009-2010, Course of Interior Design, School of Design, IED Milan
The project is about the evolution of design in my country. The past and present are shown together on images that are placed on a column, like a monument, that’s why I’ll name it: “Design Column”.
I started my idea from a well-known monument: “Trajan’s Column” (”Colonna Traiana”), which is located in Roma, Italy. In order to understand my project, I’ll write some words about its history. The monument was inaugurated in 113 AD, and was raised in honor of the victories of Roman emperor Trajan over the Dacians. Dacians have been ancestors of my country, Romania. The monument has detailed continuous frieze winds which illustrates Roman campaigns over Dacians. My project is also a column, but a higher, one. I made it higher because I want to suggest that time have passed since then and a lot of facts occurred and because nowadays everything is higher when we speak about constructions.
On my column there are images in a chronological order, which represents traditions, habits and life in my country from past to nowadays. Also, I represented the cycle of life, including the birth, the wedding and the death, starting from the bottom to the top of the column. There are images with folk costumes, traditional house interiors, custom traditions, old architecture etc. In all of these we can view fashion design, interior design, product design of my country during time.
Every image has a history and we can write hundreds of lines about it, but the main idea is the project itself.
So, I can say that my project is a compact history of the Romanian design, presented in an original manner.
