Project title: My country in typefaces- Bulgaria
Selected for scholarships 2009-2010, Course of Graphic Design, School of Visual Arts, IED Milan

Bulgaria has lots of symbols which it’s famous for: Bulgarian roses, Bulgarian yoghurt, Bulgarian brave lion… But what differentiates one country from another is the language. The language distinguishes but it also unites. Language is specific in every country or even in every region of the same country. Moreover, the language is like an individual.

If you visit Bulgaria it’s not the architecture, nor the sights that would make you the best impression. It’s the people that give the original face of the country. Individuals create the warm and hospitable atmosphere in Bulgaria.

Bulgarian language is written in the Cyrillic alphabet called Azbuka. The Saints Cyril and Methodius (who were of Bulgarian origin) created it in order to help the Christianity to spread among the Slavs. Cyrillic is now the third official alphabet in the European Union after the accession of Bulgaria to the organization.

My vision of Bulgaria, finally, follows the idea that the young, positive and friendly faces of Bulgaria are my country. Therefore I decided to represent that vision in faces. In Cyrillic typefaces it means “i am Bulgaria”
